If you already have a nationally recognised qualification in Counselling, Psychology or Psychotherapy as well as experience in the industry, we offer our Equine Assisted Mental Health Course for you. Successful graduates receive skills and knowledge to support their careers.

The course is very hands on, practical and experiential, you will learn the theory and practice of equine assisted mental health as well as equine handling skills. The course will support you to apply your mental health knowledge and skills to working therapeutically with the horses.

Class sizes are kept small to ensure optimum learning environments and guarantee all students receive individualised, in-depth learning and support. Our course involves a huge amount of personal development and growth, and the length and depth of the course ensures you will graduate feeling competent and confident in your knowledge and skills as an equine assisted mental health practitioner.

Course Length

The course is completed in 12 months with 12 x 3 day, face to face workshops as well as self directed study of approximately 10 hours per week.

The 3 day workshops will occur from Friday to Sunday from 9- 4pm. All 36 days must be attended throughout the course.

Payment Plan: $750 paid upon enrolment and then 11 instalments of $750 per month

Course Content

The following units are not Nationally recognised training units:

ET 1- Foundations in equine assisted mental health
ET 2- Safety and ethical considerations in equine assisted mental health
ET 3- Theoretical perspectives and current research in equine assisted mental health
ET 4- Safe, trauma informed practice in equine assisted mental health
ET 5- Work with children and youth in equine assisted mental health
ET 6- Create and deliver group activities for equine assisted mental health
ET 7- Developing an equine assisted mental health practice

The following units are Nationally Recognised training units:

SISOEQU001 Handle horses
ACMEQU205  Apply knowledge of horse behaviour
SISOEQU010 Identify hazards, assess and control safety risks for horse handling and riding activities
SISOEQU007 Instructing horse handling skills

Qualification

Upon the successful completion of this course, students receive a Nationally Recognised- Statement of Attainment for the following units of competency

SISOEQU001 Handle horses
ACMEQU205  Apply knowledge of horse behaviour
SISOEQU010 Identify hazards, assess and control safety risks for horse handling and riding activities
SISOEQU007 Instructing horse handling skills

Successful graduates receive a Certificate in Equine Assisted Mental Health from Equine Assisted Therapy Australia.

Entry criteria/ pre-requisites:

Students must possess a qualification in counselling, psychotherapy or psychology to at least Diploma level as well as at least 2 years experience in the industry. Equine Assisted Therapy Australia will use the holistic information submitted during the application process to determine if the course is suitable for the applicant and whether it accommodates his or her learning needs.

Location

Training and assessment take place at our private facility in the Tallebudgera Valley, on the Gold Coast.

Assessment

Assessment is ongoing throughout the course and includes practical activities and trials, written question and answers, case studies, and written assignments.
